Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Favorite Dessert Recipe Is An Eclectic Whipped Cream Concoction

At 30Seconds, we love to honor people by sharing, making and enjoying their favorite recipes. On Martin Luther King Day Jr. Day, we found a dessert recipe straight out of Dr. King's mom's recipe box: Quilly. It's said that Dr. King asked him mom, Alberta King, to make this creamy dessert for him often.

Quilly is an eclectic whipped cream dessert recipe made with unusual ingredients. The sweet dessert is made with gelatin, water, granulated sugar, heavy whipping cream, chopped almonds, macaroons (see Recipe Notes), marshmallows, a can of fruit salad, vanilla extract and decorated with sugar wafers.

Serve this fluffy, sweet and interesting snack concoction as a low-sodium dessert with your family as you discuss the incredible life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Read more about what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. liked to eat.

Recipe Notes

  • You can use rum extract instead of vanilla extract.
  • Fruit salad comes in small 8.5-ounce cans and 15-ounce cans. The size wasn't specified in the original recipe, so how much you add is up to you.
  • Coconut macaroons are the most commonly known, but you can also buy vanilla macaroons or even chocolate macaroons.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Put the gelatin into a mixing bowl with the 1/4 cup of cold water. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the boiling water and stir.
  3. Stir in the sugar. Let the mixture cool.
  4. When cool, add the whipped heavy cream, almonds, crumbled macaroons, marshmallows, drained fruit salad and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the mixture into a quart mold or bundt pan that has been rinsed with cold water. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  6. When serving, decorate with sugar wafers.
