Recipe Notes

  • Don't skip the step of letting the patties chill in the freezer before cooking. This helps the patties stay together during the cooking process.
  • For extra flavor, add some garlic or onion powder to the patties.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Put the potatoes into a pot of boiling, salted water. Cook for about 6 minutes (they will be only partially cooked). Allow to cool slightly, then grate the potatoes into a large bowl.
  2. Add the eggs and flour. Season well with salt and pepper. Still until well combined.
  3. Form the mixture into about eight rectangular patties (or whatever shape you want). Put the patties onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Put the baking sheet into the freezer for about 45 minutes.
  4. When ready to cook, heat about 1 inch of oil in a skillet to 350 degrees F. Cook the patties a few at a time until golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a paper towel and sprinkle with a little salt and black pepper. Repeat with remaining potatoes.

Crispy Hash Browns Potato Recipe Just Like Grandma Used to Make

Donna John
Yum! I love those crispy hash brown patties. We used to have hash browns as a side dish with dinner all the time. My dad (OK, I would do it, too) would stir a spoonful of mayonnaise into the hash browns. Guess it was kind of like a potato salad?
Elisa Schmitz
Mmm! That sounds really good, Donna. And how fun is it to make restaurant style hash browns at home?!

Crispy crunchy cravable. 😍
Erin Sutley
Can these be made in an air fryer?
Donna John
Yes! That's a great idea. I would spray them with cooking spray on both sides before air frying so they get crispy.
