Would you believe me if I told you that all you have to do with this mayonnaise cake recipe is combine seven simple ingredients, pour them into a dish and bake? Well, that’s it! Plus, this decadent cake has a secret ingredient that makes it super moist. What is the secret ingredient? Mayonnaise!
Our grandmothers knew that using mayonnaise in cakes is a genius way to make cakes extra moist. This cake is indeed moist, as well as decadent and delicious! (There's even a Miracle Whip cake recipe!)
It may sound strange but trust me, the mayonnaise makes chocolate cakes even more moist and delish! For an even richer experience, frost this moist cake recipe with your favorite chocolate frosting.
Variation: Sometimes Grandma would frost the cake with pecan coconut frosting like you'd put on a German chocolate cake. Delish!

Ingredients
- 2 cups flour (you can use gluten-free flour)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 cup water, lukewarm
Here's how to make it:
- Grease and flour a 13x9-inch baking pan, two round baking pans or a bundt pan. (You can use a 13x9-inch baking pan, two round baking pans or a bundt pan for this recipe. Baking time will vary depending on the type of pan you choose.)
- In a large bowl, mix together all the ingredients. Pour into the baking pan of choice. (To make this recipe gluten-free, use gluten-free flour. To lighten up this recipe, you can use light or fat-free mayonnaise.)
- Bake in a preheated 350-degree F oven for approximately 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. (Cooking time will vary depending on type of pan used.)
- Allow cake to cool completely. Frost it with your favorite chocolate frosting and serve with vanilla ice cream, if desired. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
