My family has a favorite chocolate cake recipe. My sister-in-law added this chocolate cake recipe to the Weavertown School Family Cookbook more than 20 years ago. This Amish recipe is a family favorite. Want to know the secret ingredient to this chocolate cake recipe? Hint: Brew two cups of coffee before you begin baking. Drink the second cup of coffee while it bakes (or save it to eat with the cake).
The moist chocolate cake recipe is made with flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, salt, vegetable oil, hot brewed coffee, milk and eggs. Mix all the ingredients together (just one bowl!) and bake in a 13x9-inch cake pan for about 35 minutes.
Try serving this moist chocolate cake in a bowl, soaking it in milk, topping it with ice cream – or frost it with this easy five-ingredient chocolate frosting. I sometimes take a very sharp serrated knife and cut the cake into two or three layers (as pictured) so I can frost in between the layers, too. You can never have too much chocolate frosting! This will be your new favorite chocolate cake recipe for dessert or midnight snacking.
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Servings: 16
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour (all-purpose or gluten-free flour)
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- pinch salt
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup hot coffee
- 1 cup milk
- 2 eggs
Here's how to make it:
- Mix all ingredients together. Pour into a 13x9-inch cake pan. (I like to use a rubber spatula. For a gluten-free cake, use gluten-free flour.)
- Bake at 350 degrees F in a greased 13x9-inch baking pan for 35 minutes. (For the moistest cake, do not overbake. You can frost this cake with your favorite flavor of icing.) Store any leftovers in an airtight container.
