Got a slow cooker and six hours to make a super simple, super chocolatey treat perfect for company? My two kids and spouses and six grandkids came for a visit to celebrate birthdays, and instead of making a birthday cake, I opted for a dessert recipe I only make for company or to take somewhere. Making this chocolate mess recipe here for just my husband and me means we eat too much of it!
This easy chocolate mess recipe cooks in a slow cooker (this time I did it on the slow-cooker setting on my Instant Pot™), and ends up with a ring of cake around the outside and a pudding-like middle. It's a little like a lava cake, only not nearly as pretty as those come out!
Here is your shopping list for this chocolate Instant Pot™ recipe: a box of chocolate cake mix, a box of cook-and-serve chocolate pudding, dark chocolate chips (or your favorite type of chocolate chips), eggs, vegetable oil, sour cream and some water.
Topped with some ice cream, your guests will be drooling! One batch made enough to give everybody some in a cup with room for ice cream on top. This rich slow-cooker chocolate dessert doesn't look like much, but, boy, is it tasty!
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 6 hours
Total Time: 6 hours and 10 minutes
Servings: 10
Ingredients
- 15 ounces (1 box) chocolate cake mix (I use Devil's Food)
- 3.4 ounces (1 small box) cook-and-serve chocolate pudding mix (not instant)
- 6 ounces dark chocolate chips
- 4 eggs
- 3/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup water
- 2 cups sour cream (1 pint)
Here's how to make it:
- Grease the slow cooker or Instant Pot™. (If using the Instant Pot™, make sure to set the release valve for "venting" and not pressure cooking.)
- Mix ingredients and pour into the pot. Cook on low for 6 hours (5 1/2 was enough in the Instant Pot™). Cooking too long just overcooks the cake part.
- Top with your favorite flavor of ice cream. Mint chocolate chip is mighty fine! Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat in the microwave.
