This Easy Grilled Sardines Recipe Will Make You Love This Little Oily Fish

If you only think of little fish in that rectangular tin when someone mentions sardines, then you haven't tried fresh grilled sardines. This easy grilled sardines recipe will change your mind – and possibly make you a sardine lover.

Cuisine: Mediterranean
Prep Time: 30 minutes to 1 hour
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour and 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh sardines, scaled and gutted

Marinade

Garnish

  • chopped fresh parsley, for serving
  • lemon wedges, for serving

Here's how to make it:

  1. Combine all the marinade ingredients. Season with salt and pepper. Put the fish into a plastic zipper bag and pour in the marinade. Let the sardine marinate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  2. Heat a grill to medium-high heat. Remove the sardines from the marinade and cook on the hot grill until charred, about 2 minutes. Flip and continue cooking for about 2 minutes more.
  3. Put the sardines on a serving platter and sprinkle with the parsley. Serve with lemon wedges.

Note: The sardines could also be cooked in a hot cast iron skillet or grill pan.

I have never eaten sardines. Will have to try them the next time the fish department has some. I do love grilled fish. My dad would eat the ones in the tin on crackers with onions almost every Sunday night growing up. I can hear that crunch as he took a bite right now. lol

I have always wanted to try the not-from-a-can sardines. Thanks for the recipe!

We ate a lot of sardines growing up. It's a very "Old World" thing, I think - especially from where my dad grew up in near the Mediterranean! #yum
