Did you ever notice how some people love frosting so much that they'll eat it with a spoon, while others dislike it enough that they'll scrape it off their cake? To each her own, but I recently made a sweet buttery glaze recipe that was so good, it had frosting lovers and haters alike raving about it. This decadent brown butter salted caramel glaze recipe is truly the icing on the cake! You simply have to try it.
This buttery banana snack cake recipe with salted caramel glaze was so delicious that I was literally jumping up and down. What made that cake extra irresistible was the brown butter caramel frosting. It's indescribably delicious! Trust me when I tell you that you need to make this salted caramel glaze ASAP – then spread it on absolutely everything. If you like rich and creamy caramel, then you will love this dreamy frosting recipe. I would happily eat a bowl of it all by itself for dessert (or anytime, just because).
To make this mouth-watering salted caramel glaze recipe, here are the gluten-free ingredients you'll need: butter, brown sugar, heavy cream, fine sea salt and powdered sugar. The flaky sea salt is optional, for serving. You brown the butter in a saucepot first, then add the brown sugar, heavy cream and salt. Stir to combine then allow mixture to boil for a minute or so. Remove from heat and allow mixture to sit for five minutes before sifting in the powdered sugar. Whisk until the glaze is completely smooth, then immediately spread the deliciousness onto your favorite sweets. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt for an extra special touch, if you like.
I spread this decadent brown butter salted caramel glaze onto my banana cake for dessert, but it's equally at home on your treats of choice – think cookies, cupcakes, muffins or even over ice cream – at snack time or any time at all. The sky is the limit!

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, cut into pieces
- 2/3 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar, sifted
- flaky sea salt (optional, for serving)
Here's how to make it:
- In a medium saucepot over medium heat, add the butter slices.
- Cook, stirring constantly, until butter is melted and browned, about 5 minutes.
- Add the brown sugar, heavy cream and salt. Stir to combine and bring to a boil. Over medium heat, allow mixture to boil for about 1 minute. Remove saucepot from heat and allow mixture to sit for about 5 minutes.
- Sift the powdered sugar into the mixture.
- Whisk until completely smooth.
- Immediately spread the glaze over cakes, cupcakes, cookies, muffins or even ice cream. If desired and you have the time, allow frosted treats to sit for about half an hour before serving, to allow glaze to set.
- Sprinkle wish flaky sea salt, if desired, and serve. Store leftover glaze in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
