Discipline Techniques: It's Time to Put "Time-Out" in Time-Out (Try This Instead!) Kids Tip of the Day

As the parent of a 10- and 8-year-old, there are plenty of frustrating moments. Times when kids get nasty and disrespectful, to each other or to their parents, can be particularly difficult. The age old and often relied upon ‘time-out’ can be a quick fix. Although it offers immediate relief for you as a parent, many experts have challenged its usefulness in shaping more desired behavior.

Instead, try to replace the ‘time out’ with something more creative that gives rather than takes away. Having the guilty party choose from various age-appropriate acts of kindness they can complete for the person they hurt.

  • clear the table for them
  • make their bed
  • draw them a picture
  • read them a book

It can be restorative and more effective in shaping your child's behavior!
