Skip "Stop Crying": 10 Better Ways to Talk to Kids When They're Upset

Do you tend to say “stop crying” to your child when they’re upset about something? In my opinion, here are 10 better things to say to your kids when they’re sad.

  1. “It’s OK to be sad.”
  2. “This is really hard for you. Let me help you find a way to solve this problem.”
  3. “I hear you.”
  4. “Tell me about it.”
  5. “That was really scary/sad.”
  6. “I am here with you.”
  7. “I will help you work it out.”
  8. “I am listening.”
  9. “I hear that you need space. I want to be here for you. I’ll stay close so you can find me when you’re ready.”
  10. “It doesn’t feel fair.”
