Koufonisi, Greece: One of the "Secret" Greek Islands (For Now, Anyway) International

Just south of the Greek Island of Naxos there is a quiet little island called Koufonisi, with pristine beaches, flagstone streets and not too many tourists. Whitewashed buildings trimmed in Mediterranean blue, with walls draped in bougainvillea, line the stone streets of the chora.

Various restaurants, tavernas and cafés ensure you are filled with amazing Greek food at its island best. The island is small enough to walk around the town, so cars are not required. There are plenty of tourist accommodations for all budget levels or you can visit the island on a daytrip from Naxos, which is how I found it.

Legend has it that there are caves along the coastline which were once used by pirates – a curiosity worth seeing. There are even a couple of iconic Greek windmills on the hills. As I walked around the town I just knew that I would want to come back to this island and get to know it better, while staying there for a few more days.
