Round Ligament Pain: Symptoms, Treatments & Causes of This Common Complaint During Pregnancy Complications Second Trimester

Are you having sharp or jabbing pains in your lower belly or groin area, Mom-to-be? It’s probably round ligament pain, which is a common complaint for pregnant moms. The good news is, according to WebMD, that it’s considered a normal part of pregnancy, and usually starts during the second trimester.

Causes of Round Ligament Pain: When a woman is not pregnant, the uterus is about the size of an apple. The round ligaments hold the uterus in place, and as it grows during pregnancy, they stretch and get longer and thinner, which can cause pain.

Symptoms of Round Ligament Pain: According to WebMD, the symptoms include a “sharp, sudden spasm in the belly,” and it usually affects the right side, though some women do have pain on both sides. The pain lasts just a few seconds. Here are some things that may cause round ligament pain:

  • exercise
  • sneezing
  • coughing
  • laughing
  • rolling over in bed
  • standing up too fast

Treatment of Round Ligament Pain: While there is no treatment, there are some things you can do to help reduce the discomfort:

  • Ask your doctor what over-the-counter pain relief is OK for you to take.
  • While exercise can cause the round ligament pain, it is important for you to exercise to keep your stomach muscles strong. Prenatal yoga and gentle stretches are good options, but always consult your doctor first.
  • Apply heat with a heating pad or take a warm (not hot!) bath.
  • Be aware of your posture and stand and sit up straight.
  • Consider investing in a maternity girdle to help relieve some of the pressure as your belly grows.
  • Get a massage.

While round ligament pain is typically harmless, if you have any of the following symptoms, call your OB-GYN immediately:

  • fever
  • severe pain that won’t go away
  • chills
  • trouble when urinating
