Swimming During Pregnancy: 6 Reasons Why Moms-to-Be Need to Get Into the Water Prenatal Fitness Fun and Relaxation

During pregnancy, most mothers are naturally concerned with keeping up their physical health and fitness and engaging in exercise that is safe. While walking and low-impact exercise are generally safe, consider swimming as a fitness option, as it offers many benefits. Here are just a few reasons to give swimming a try, Mom-to-be:

  1. Relief from sore muscles and joints, partly due to water buoyancy.
  2. Eases back pain – there is less strain from Baby's weight during swimming.
  3. Improves muscle tone.
  4. Helps with blood circulation.
  5. Water helps to prevent overheating from exercise (which may harm the fetus).
  6. It's relaxing and fun!

A research study published in the Journal of Physiotherapy examined the impact of aqua-aerobic exercise in pools heated up to 91 degrees F (33 degrees Celsius). Within the range of 82 to 91 degrees F, the mother's body temperature was maintained within safe limits.

Various other studies were also conducted to study the effects of swimming on pregnancy, and it was found that women who swam in early/mid-pregnancy had a slightly reduced risk of giving birth preterm or giving birth to a child with congenital malformations.

If you are going to swim during pregnancy, be mindful to check water safety and swim in pools that are regularly cleaned and chlorinated.

Yes! I loved swimming during pregnancy. The relief is instant. I also did water aerobics, which was great for strength building. Thanks for the awesome tip, Mei Marcie !
