Baby Talk: 7 Conversations Pregnant Parents Need to Have Before Baby Arrives Dad-to-Be

We got pregnant on our honeymoon. We were madly in love and magically thought everything would work itself out after our bundle of joy arrived. I wish I'd known that no matter how strong you think your relationship is, you need to talk about roles, responsibilities and expectations ahead of time. I would have set a foundation for our marriage, saved countless arguments and avoided resentments building up if we would have sat down and had these seven conversations:

  • Discuss how you will handle feedings, sleeping and chores (this sets the stage for the future).
  • Agree that you will each share your feelings, seek to understand and listen with an open mind.
  • Talk about the ways you were each raised. What did you like about how you were parented? What didn't you like? What do you believe about discipline? This may seem premature, but it will help you to understand the way you each approach parenting.
  • Discuss your fears.
  • Agree to ask for help rather than expecting the other to read your mind.
  • Discuss how you will be intentional to make time for each other.
  • Agree that things won't always go as planned, you may argue and disagree, but agree to stay in it and always work it through.

What did you talk to your partner about before your baby was born that helped? Please share below.

Thanks Elisa - It's such a powerful principle to live by. I say to my kids too - we can argue and disagree but we stay in it and work it through!
