Your newsfeed has probably been filled lately with debate about women’s reproductive rights and abortion amidst a possible Roe v. Wade reversal. No doubt you’ve heard the opinions and arguments of politicians, activists, religious leaders and legal scholars. Perhaps you’d be surprised to know that a Mormon mother’s tweet on the issue has over 36 million impressions, particularly when you hear her argument.
“I’m a mother of six, and a Mormon. I have a good understanding of arguments surrounding abortion, religious and otherwise. I've been listening to men grandstand about women's reproductive rights, and I'm convinced men actually have zero interest in stopping abortion.”
When Gabrielle Blair wrote the opening of her Twitter thread in 2018 (after hearing so many men discussing women’s reproductive rights related to the Kavanaugh hearings), she worried that no one would read it. Her worry was unfounded. In fact, the thread has become widely read and shared again recently, garnering the attention of celebrities like Glennon Doyle and Alyssa Milano who have both retweeted her message.

Blair continues, with her proposal for how to end abortions: “If you want to stop abortion, you need to prevent unwanted pregnancies. And men are 100 percent responsible for unwanted pregnancies … Women can only get pregnant about two days each month. And that’s for a limited number of years … That makes 24 days a year a woman [sic] might get pregnant. But men can cause pregnancy 365 days a year ... Men can cause unwanted pregnancies from puberty till death...”
The tweet develops from there. She concludes with, “In summary: STOP TRYING TO CONTROL WOMEN’S BODIES AND SEXUALITY. UNWANTED PREGNANCIES ARE CAUSED BY MEN.”
Gabrielle Blair is a self-described 47-year-old designer, mother of 6 and Mormon. Her thread about unwanted pregnancies, abortion and women’s bodily autonomy is liked, retweeted and debated on a daily basis, by men and women alike. Blair re-shared the thread on her design blog DesignMom.com. Following the thread, she added a post script in which she asks her readers a question:
“What could we do as a society to have men shoulder the burden of preventing unwanted pregnancies?”
I appreciate this question because I don’t hear many people asking it, and I certainly don’t hear our lawmakers answering it.
