Katy Perry & Social Media Pressure: The "American Idol" Judge Questions Social Media's Purpose & Influence Headlines

Katy Perry is looking for more balance, and perhaps less of a social media presence, moving forward this year. The pop star, 33, stated she is a “victim” of social media pressure and its push to look and act perfect. With more than 68 million Instagram followers and more than 108 million Twitter followers, she has described social media as a “decline in civilization.” She urges her own followers to spend less time on social media and more time enjoying and living real life.

Perry joins a large number of other stars in their criticism of social media, including Ed Sheeran and Selena Gomez. Take a glance around any restaurant, store, subway or office waiting room. You’ll see heads looking down, staring into the magical phone screen. People take photos of their meals before eating them now. People are taking more and more photos with the lens pointing inward instead of outward. We know more about a high-school acquaintance than we do our neighbors. 

This year, let’s all spend more time off of our screens than in front of them. Put down the phone and pick up an old hobby or passion. How many hours would you gain in a day if you gave up or limited social media?
