When you think of the word SUCCESS and your teen, what comes to mind? According to Julie Lythcott-Haims' Ted Talk, when we plan and direct our teens' lives to help them be successful, we are actually diminishing their self-efficacy. Instead try this:
- Step back. Teens need to be able to believe in their ability to complete tasks and reach goals on their own.
- Focus less on grades, scores, accolades and rewards, and listen more to what is important to your teen right now.
- Expect your teen to help out around the house and be part of family gatherings.
- Remember, your teen's success is not yours to define.
