If you’re anything like me, you’re frustrated and saddened by the divide in our country right now. There’s so much anger, fear and hatred. How can we begin to talk to our kids about it?
Child development professor Brigitte Vittrup asserts that, “Children see and hear the news, and unless we teach them otherwise, they may start to believe that white and black people don’t like each other and are meant to be separate.”
Let’s not let our kids believe this. Let’s not be silent, for “silence can breed prejudice.” Silence “removes the opportunity for children to learn about diversity from their parents and puts it in the hands of media and misinformed peers," as Vittrup says.
Let’s not allow this to happen. We need to be our children's teachers. We must teach them about diversity and justice. Now.
