Burlesque and drag have reinterpreted the aesthetic with new layers of theatricality. And a 2025 Taylor Swift album draws on this history, acknowledging not only the glamour but also the cultural weight of a figure that has been reinvented again and again."
While the term showgirl is often associated with elaborate costumes and performances (think Vegas), little girls don't have to wear feathers and beads on stage to live their showgirl dreams. In many dancing styles, costumes and special clothing are a big part of the dance. Ballroom dancers wear beautiful gowns, ballet dancers wear tulle and organza tutus, salsa dancers sassy dresses, hula dancers straw skirts and leis, and dancers in India wear sarees, jewels and ankle bells.
