I know, I know. You love your books, you collect them, cherish them, smell them, they are a comfort, blah blah blah. I've been there. But I am here to tell you that it's OK to let some books go!
Believe me when I say, there will come a time when you absolutely need to say goodbye to some, maybe most, of your books due to life changes, etc. We all have our favorites that we will never let go. For me it's Gone With the Wind, Harry Potter, Jane Eyre. But if you are someone that buys books new, used, go to garage sales, estate sales, etc., to buy books, I am telling you that if you don't get it under control now, in five to 10 years you are going to be overwhelmed with the stacks of books! You will get discouraged with the amount of books you have that are unread and before you know it, you won't enjoy reading like you used to because it will feel like a job.
If you are like me and feel like you are drowning in books and feel guilty that they are laying around unread, here are some options:
- Have a garage sale. You won't get what you paid for them, but people love buying books at garage sales, and you will most likely get rid of a big chunk that way.
- Donate books to your local library. (Most times they want more recent releases.)
- Send them to our military men and women. Operation Paperback is a great organization.
- Start at little free library in your area. Get more information at Little Free Library.
- E-mail your local high school and ask if they take donations.
- Donate to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army.
I love reading and books are meant to be shared! I hope these ideas help. Happy reading!
