Children are very smart and they understand at a very young age how to use what works. As a preschool teacher, I see this all the time. When kids whine, they do so because they expect that it will get your attention and ultimately get you to give them what they want. You can stop it by changing your reaction to it. How?

• Simply don't respond if your child whines. 
• Or say, "I can't understand those words." 
• You can even restate their request as a non-whining example, then wait for them to say it the way you did. 

If you are consistent with this response, you can say goodbye to whining!
