A Learning Vacation for Kids: How Books Can Merge Travel & Education (Shh! They Won't Even Know!) by Marge Jesberger

Vacation can be full of learning experiences for your family. One great way is to merge learning with travel. Here are a few fun ways to trick your child into thinking they are on vacation, but it is really life's virtual classroom:

• Read Heidi by Johanna Spyri then hike a mountain peak near you. Pack a picnic of fresh bread, cheese and goat milk to add to the experience.

• After reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, be sure to visit the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Conn., to tour and learn all about this eccentric cat-loving author. The home is exquisite, with walls hand-painted by Lois C. Tiffany, and is nicknamed Downton Abbey's American cousin.

• Read The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, then walk the Freedom Trail in Boston and tour his Silversmith shop. Visit Philadelphia's Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

• Got littles? Read your favorite Dr. Seuss books and experience the hands-on Dr. Seuss Museum in Springfield, Mass. If you can't get there, read about the history of your own hometown, then walk around the city square and point out its heritage.

The possibilities are exciting, educational and endless.
