As We Rebuild Florida, Let’s Not Forget Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands & Houston by Joyce Knestrick, CRNP, FAANP

All eyes are on Florida right now in Hurricane Irma’s wake, but there are still people who need help elsewhere. Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands were both hit by Irma at full strength, and Houston is still cleaning up from Hurricane Harvey’s record-smashing rainfall. Here are some ways to help in Texas and the Caribbean:

• Donate: The Center for International Disaster Information has resources on how to help, and emphasizes that monetary donations are the best way. Money can do far more than blankets or perishable food.
• Think Local: People will be rebuilding long after the weather clears, so focus on supporting local relief organizations in affected areas.
• Volunteer: Cleaning up and rebuilding takes more than money – it takes elbow grease. Habitat for Humanity offers opportunities to help people rebuild their homes. The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster has opportunities to help in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
• Don’t Get Scammed: The Federal Trade Commission has tips on choosing charities and the Better Business Bureau often rates or accredits trustworthy organizations.
