Teaching Time to Kids: How to Encourage Time & Sequencing Skills With a Calendar! by Mindy Hudon, M.S., CCC-SLP

Many children struggle with grasping the concept of time because it’s so abstract. A calendar is a great visual tool to help children learn about time and sequencing concepts such as: before, after, first, last, next, month, day, year, week, yesterday, today, tomorrow and until. You can ask and answer the following questions using a calendar as your guide:
- How many days “until” vacation?
- What day comes “before” Tuesday?
- What month comes “after” March?
- What is the "last" day of the month?
- Today is Friday. What day was it “yesterday?"
- What day will “tomorrow” be?
- Today is the “first” day of the month.
- What did we do “yesterday” at the beach?
- You can also point out something that happened “last week” or "two weeks ago” while pointing to that row on the calendar.
- Use pictures that you have taken from past events and paste them on your calendar as a visual reference.
You get the idea. It’s a concrete way of helping kids “see” the passage of time.
