• Spokane, Wash., resident Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother's Day sermon at her church in 1909 when she had the idea to establish a day for dads.

• Dodd reached out to churches, government officials, businesses and other establishments to help, which lead to the first Father's Day in 1910.

• Dodd had wanted the day to be on her own Father's Birthday, June 5, but it was hard to people to prepare so it was moved to the third Sunday in June. The first celebration took place on June 19, 1910.
