No Plans for Mother's Day, Just Something to Look Forward To: Why That's a Good Thing Holidays Motherhood

Oh, what a year it’s been. I was having coffee on my patio this morning thinking of the year since last Mother’s Day. Last May, we were quarantined at home, schools were closed, graduation was canceled and the world seemed so uncertain to me for the first time in my life.

I learned so much during that time in the forms of both reflection and observation. As I think of this Mother’s Day weekend, I am more grateful and appreciative than I was before the pandemic. We have experienced extreme joys and sorrows this year, as many of you have. The little things in life have become the most important.

I was asked, "What do you want for Mother’s Day?” Normally, I would say, "You don’t have to buy me anything “ or give a list of material "must haves." But This year, I said, "Let’s just be! Let’s do what we feel like doing Sunday on Sunday. Let’s enjoy the spontaneity of the weekend! Let’s be together. Let’s have some fun without so much planning, expense or time clocks."

Wherever we go, whatever we do, making memories together, not buying THINGS, have become what I want.

So much so, my brother and sister and I bought my 78-year-old mother concert tickets to one her favorite bands and we are all taking her together in September. I haven’t been this excited to give her a gift in a long time. It’s not only a fun gift, it’s something to look forward to.

My wish for all of us moms this year is that each of have something to look forward to all year long. Say that again...

Something to look forward to.

Happy Mother’s Day!
