When a Family Pet Dies: How to Help Your Child Manage Their Grief Parenting Pets

The death of a family pet can be devastating, especially for children, as it may be their first experience with death. With a sudden loss, it’s best to tell them at home where they feel comfortable. Provide them with information you think they’re able to handle, based on their age.

If you have a  pet suffering from an illness, prepare your children for your pet’s death. Explain that the veterinarian has done all they could do for the pet and that, if your pet has to be euthanized, it will take away the pet’s pain.

Offer your child a memento, like a lock of fur, to remember their beloved pet.
