Conscious Discipline: Seeing Things From Your Child’s Perspective May Make Discipline Easier Parenting

Discipline is not a topic many parents want to think about. Disciplining your little one is not easy, yet it’s vital to the growth and development process. How you discipline your child matters. In order to help shape proper behavior, how can you do that without becoming a boss and dictating every move they make?

One method is called Conscious Discipline. Developed by Dr. Becky Bailey, an early childhood educator and author, the focus is on helping your child feel loved and valued, even when they are being corrected. The focus with Conscious Discipline is helping to modify behavior by encouraging them to understand their emotions better, instead of merely reacting to what you or another adult says.

One of the most important first steps in Conscious Discipline is to see things from your child’s perspective. It’s easy to see how upset or hurt you are in the moment, but when you try to understand things from his or her perspective, that will help inform how best to deal with this challenge.
