Language Development in Toddlers & Preschoolers: 4 Ways to Help Develop Your Child's Language Skills Parenting

Language is essential for toddlers and preschoolers. Small children can learn in many different ways, especially from you. You can help develop their language skills through a few simple and fun activities (especially fun for them!):

  • Reading with your child. Whether your child is a toddler, moving to grade school or even approaching middle school age, reading to them helps them to develop better language skills.
  • Help them expand what they say. Children often simplify stories. Help them to expand those stories and build on what they’ve told you.
  • Listen. Listening is one of the most important communication tools we have and one of the most easily overlooked. When your child speaks, pay attention. Listen to him or her. The more they know you’re listening and paying attention, the more likely they’ll continue talking and that can help you encourage better language skills.
  • Offer and ask for simple directions. By practicing giving instructions and receiving clear directions from you, your child will improve his or her language skills.
