Giving Back at Christmastime: Why You Should Adopt a Grandparent This Holiday Season Make a Difference Holidays

The holidays are a time to rejoice and spend time with loved ones near and far. While many of us enjoy the company of family and friends, some elderly individuals living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities are unable to travel or don't have a family.

I recently signed myself up – and my adorable pup Cooper – as a volunteer at our local nursing home and was shocked to learn how many residents would not have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with family members or loved ones. After having lost my own grandparents at a very young age, I decided Cooper and I would adopt a grandparent to spend this holiday season with us!

There's something to be said about helping the less fortunate. The sorrow on a grown man's face when he talks about a beloved pet he lost as a child. The shriek of delight from an elderly woman as she watches a pouncing puppy, tail wagging furiously, dash through the doorway while anticipating a face full of wet kisses.

The benefits I have received by spending just a few short hours with my "adopted" family members are immeasurable. I am reminded of my blessings and am fortunate to have experienced the true meaning of Christmas.
