Homemade Pop-Tarts®: Friends Gathered & Made This DIY Breakfast Pastries Recipe! Activities

My friends and I recently gathered together to catch up, laugh and to learn how to make homemade Pop-Tarts® (and a few other yummy treats)! Our host went above and beyond to create a special experience by having cooking stations set up for each of us, samples of all that we would be making and printed recipes for us to take home!

I’m not one to make anything fabulous in the kitchen, so my expectations for an edible turnout were low. With friends by my side and step-by-step directions, my Pop-Tarts® ended up tasting delicious! We had such a great time that we decided monthly cooking parties are now a necessity! Next time we will learn how to make pasta!

I never thought I’d have a “cooking party” with friends for fun, but I did and it was awesome! I encourage you to make time to spend with your tribe and to think outside of the box when it comes to finding things to do! Here's a great homemade Pop-Tarts® recipe from TornADoughAlli.com. You can use any filling you like (I used raspberry and blueberry jam)!

You'll need:

  • 2 1/2 cups flour, plus more for sprinkling
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup cold, salted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 jar strawberry preserves

Icing

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 - 2 tablespoons milk
  • sprinkles

Here's how to make them:

  1. In food processor, add the flour and sugar and pulse to combine. Add the butter and pulse again until it comes together. Add the vanilla and slowly add the water. Do not over mix.
  2. Ball up the dough and cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least 20-30 minutes. Once chilled, put dough on a clean work surface and roll it into a large 1/4-inch thick rectangle. Cut into 12 equal rectangles.
  3. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and cover with parchment paper. Put six rectangles on the baking sheet.
  4. Add about 2 tablespoons of strawberry preserves to the center of each rectangle and spread around. Top with the remaining six rectangles and press edges to seal with a fork.
  5. Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven for about 15 minutes or until golden. Remove and cool.
  6. When cool, make the icing by combining the powdered sugar and milk. Spread over tarts. Decorate with the sprinkles, if desired.

Mmmmm Renee Herren ! This would be fun to make with the kids. I would have to do chocolate ones for them and apple for me. Like little mini apple pies. They look delicious! Thanks for sharing! :-)
Renee
Apple would be sooo good and yes this would be a great cooking activity for kids! They could add sprinkles to theirs!

I am going to make these with my boys! They will love it.
Renee
They will! Especially if you let them choose their fillings and add sprinkles!

I made these in the past and created rainbow dough. It was great; my son thought the colors were awesome and he loved that we made them with his favorite jams.
Renee
Oh I bet he loved them for sure!!!

This is so cool! PopTarts=my favorite breakfast as a kid! Did I miss how you make the edges scalloped?
Renee
All we did is use the fork to pinch both sides together!
Terri Kendrick
But it looks like the dough, before it was pinched together, was cut with pinking shears.
Renee
Terri Jones ohhhh! We used some kind of big cookie cutter thing! Can you tell I don’t go in the kitchen much!? 😂
