Getting a Divorce? Here Are 3 Tips to Help You "Go Through" a Divorce With Grace Relationships

There is a reason we commonly say “going through,” rather than “getting” a divorce. The dissolution of a marriage is an emotional and grueling process, and is most certainly not a switch that can be easily flipped. However challenging, here are a few things to keep in mind that might make the process a little easier to bear:

  • It’s temporary. Divorce is a process, not a permanent state. You will get through it eventually. Life will be different. Different can be better if you choose to focus on new opportunities and try not to dwell on the past.
  • Share. It’s hard to bring up randomly at the water cooler, but having a few key coworkers know what I was going through made a big difference. It’s helpful to have a sympathetic smile available when tough client feedback hits on a tough day.
  • Make plans for you. Take yourself to the movies or for a mani/pedi. Quiet time will give you the chance to mentally process the changes in your life. Book a long weekend with some girlfriends. Something on the calendar to look forward to keeps one foot moving in front of the other.

Let yourself feel. It's an exceptionally difficult time. But, you will get through. And you will be OK.
