Parenting is a learned skill that is first modeled by your parents during your childhood. Some may not have been lucky to have healthy role models. This may make you feel ill-equipped for this difficult job. Unless you are aware of the shortcomings of your role models or upbringing and are willing to try to change yourself, then there is a huge risk of repeating the same issues from your childhood.

The advantage of being a parent now is that you have the ability to use your past to improve your children's future. Proactive parents anticipate this and work through issues from their childhood as early as possible. This may mean getting counseling if needed. The exciting news is that positive parenting skills can be learned. With time, persistence and love, let's break the cycle of trauma in the next generation.
