When you think of the word SUCCESS and your teen, what comes to mind? According to Julie Lythcott-Haims' Ted Talk, when we plan and direct our teens' lives to help them be successful, we are actually diminishing their self-efficacy. Instead try this:

  • Step back. Teens need to be able to believe in their ability to complete tasks and reach goals on their own.
  • Focus less on grades, scores, accolades and rewards, and listen more to what is important to your teen right now.
  • Expect your teen to help out around the house and be part of family gatherings.
  • Remember, your teen's success is not yours to define.

What steps do you need to take to provide a nourishing environment to help build your teen's self-efficacy?

This is such an awesome tip, Kelli Schulte! As the mom of three teens, I learned this the hard way. I had to let go of my own expectations for them and instead, let them figure out who they are and who they want to be. I think so many parents "helicopter" over their kids that this seems counter-intuitive. But, it's absolutely necessary - and we all need to stop hovering. They've got this (and if they don't, we'll be there to help)!

Thanks Elisa All 30SecondMom! It's definitely not as easy as it sounds! :)
