Rejection Notice? Here Are 6 Positive Strategies for Writers (Anyone, Actually)!

Recently receive a rejection notice on a writing (or other) project? Don’t let it discourage you or dampen your spirits. Here is a list of helpful strategies to follow in dealing with negative responses.

  • Once you send something out, catalog it and then forget about it.
  • Research your next target for your project.
  • On the day you receive a rejection, mail or send via Internet your next query or project abstract to previously targeted organizations/entities.
  • As soon as you complete a project, start taking notes or reading in preparation for your next project (writing or otherwise).
  • Keep a weekly journal with thoughts, insights, phrases or ideas you have read or new ones of your own.
  • Celebrate your courage in sending out or presenting a project, not simply your successes.

Always look on the bright side!

What do you write, Mindy?
Mindy Hudon, M.S., CCC-SLP
I wrote a children's book but have not had much luck getting it published. So I understand rejection very well. It is very discouraging. I am also working on a YR chapter book.

I'm very impressed with your accomplishments. Thanks for sharing this tip.

Mindy, Children's books are very difficult to get published. Don't get discouraged. It is not about quality but finding the hook to interest a publisher. I might write more about this. Let me know how it goes. I subscribe to Poets & Writers that offers lots of information and listing of publishers of all types. Maybe we can discuss further.

Yes. Children's book publishing is hard. I am considering sending my book to educational publishers. Would love to chat. Thanks.
