Coughs & Sore Throats: 5 Tips to Help Soothe Cold Weather Health Issues Family Health

When air is dry during cold weather months, it irritates the mucous membranes and can cause a cough or sore throat. Here are five tips that can help:

  • Stay well hydrated.
  • Cover your mouth with a scarf when going into cold, dry air.
  • Humidifiers can help, but be careful to follow manufacturer cleaning instructions. They can grow mold if not cared for properly.
  • If you develop a cough, try honey or cough lozenges. This increases saliva production, which helps coat the throat.
  • Gargling salt water also helps hydrate the throat. Don’t make it too salty or it will have the reverse effect. Half a teaspoon in 8 ounces of water works well.
