What You Should Know About Dry Drowning & Secondary Drowning Family Health Safety

According to WebMD, dry drowning happens when someone breathes in small amounts of water during a struggle. Secondary drowning occurs when fluid builds up in the lungs, called pulmonary edema, after a near-drowning incident. Kids who experience this may go in and out of consciousness, but can be revived and seem fine. However, hours or even days later, that inhaled water can be deadly. This results in breathing trouble and brain injury, and if left untreated, it can be fatal. Look for: 

• trouble breathing
• chest pain or cough
• sudden changes in behavior
• extreme fatigue
