NewsNation and former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo developed POTS after contracting COVID-19 early in the coronavirus pandemic. He’s not alone. The majority of people with long COVID suffer from Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which is experienced when standing up from a sitting position.

Between one and three million Americans suffer from POTS, which, as a syndrome affecting the autonomic nervous system, includes a constellation of seemingly unrelated symptoms, e.g., lightheadedness, dizziness, brain fog, rapid heartbeat, palpitations, fainting, fatigue, blurred vision and exercise intolerance.

Stand up and your heart starts racing and you feel lightheaded. In extreme cases, some people may actually pass out. But in most cases it simply triggers severe fatigue and cognitive dysfunction.

We see POTS associated with post-viral conditions including chronic fatigue syndrome and its painful cousin fibromyalgia, mononucleosis, Lyme disease, some autoimmune diseases like lupus, celiac disease and in Sjogren’s syndrome, as well as long COVID. Patients look healthy on the outside and blood tests show no evidence of lingering infection, but their personal experience is often that they’re living on the edge of functionality. A plethora of disabling symptoms may be present which are vexing for patients to experience and frustrating for the physicians who are trying to help them.

The vast majority of general physicians are unprepared to diagnose and treat POTS. Fortunately, two simple and free tests that people can do at home can effectively screen for POTS. There are numerous treatments that research also shows to be helpful, many that people can do on their own.
