Is Your Body Trying to Tell You Something? 3 Common Health Ailments You Shouldn't Ignore Women's Health Men's Health Family Health Diseases/Disorders
Think that nagging click in your knee is nothing to worry about? Or maybe that occasional lower back twinge isn’t worth mentioning to your doctor? While these might seem like typical aging and minor inconveniences, physical therapists suggest that these overlooked issues could be signals of underlying health concerns.
Brooks Rehabilitation is shedding light on three often neglected physical ailments that could be signaling something more serious. If you’ve been brushing off these issues, it might be time to pay attention.
According to Lindsey Augustine, PT, DPT, OCS, and Ashley Spears, PT, DPT, OCS, your body has ways of telling you when something’s wrong, and it’s crucial to listen. Here are three common ailments you shouldn’t ignore:
1. Knee Clicking: More Than Just an Annoyance
According to Spears, knee clicking is one of those subtle signs that many people shrug off. “Some of the more common ‘clicking’ sensations could be swelling, osteoarthritis, patellar (kneecap) mal-tracking or instability,” Spears explains. “Even general swelling in and around the knee can create additional inflammation, leading to more surfaces rubbing together. Too much swelling can cause our thigh muscles to shut off.”
Infrequent clicking or popping sounds in the knee may not be cause for alarm, but Spears warns that consistent clicking, especially if accompanied by sharp pain, knee buckling or a locking sensation, should be a red flag.
2. Lower Back Pain: The Silent Signal of Deeper Issues
Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints among adults, yet it’s often dismissed as a normal part of aging or a result of poor posture. However, persistent lower back pain could indicate more significant problems such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis or even kidney issues.
Back pain that’s persistent and doesn’t respond to over-the-counter treatments or rest should be evaluated by a physical therapist. Ignoring this pain can lead to chronic conditions or require more invasive treatments down the road.
3. Foot Pain: Not Just a Shoe Problem
Foot pain is frequently attributed to uncomfortable shoes or long hours on your feet, but it could also be a symptom of conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis or even stress fractures.
Foot pain that persists or worsens over time should be taken seriously. If left untreated, there could be potential further damage. It could also create compensations that create unconscious behaviors and mechanics that could lead to problems in other areas, such as hip pain or back pain.
If your feet hurt, don’t just swap your shoes – consult a healthcare professional to rule out more serious issues.
Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs
According to Augustine, simple lifestyle changes, such as adopting a balanced diet and staying hydrated, can help keep joints healthy and reduce the wear and tear that leads to pain and discomfort.
“A body in motion stays in motion,” says Augustine. “Keeping a regular exercise regime keeps your tissues working, and good stress on your body causes it to adapt to new strength and flexibility standards, making daily activities easier.”
The consequences of ignoring your body’s signals can be risky. The message is clear: listen to your body and take action before minor issues become major health problems.
