Jennifer Aniston’s Wellness Tip to Drink Collagen Coffee (But Is It Good for You?) Nutrition Women's Health

Perhaps nothing demonstrates the popularity and staying power of the TV sitcom Friends better than Jennifer Aniston’s career and social media following. On Instagram, the actress and entrepreneur shares, among other things, the health and wellness regimen that helps her achieve personal wellness, such as playing with her dogs, listening to music and exercising. She recently shared a new daily ritual: starting her day with a hot mug of coffee mixed with collagen powder.

We wanted to learn more about collagen, and collagen coffee, and share our findings with you. First, what is collagen?

Collagen is a compound found in the skin and in connective tissues that make up our ligaments, tendons, muscles, etc. It’s the most abundant protein in the body. However, over time, the aging process breaks down the body’s collagen and makes it harder to produce more. Collagen powder has become a popular supplement due to its potential health benefits.

So what are the potential health benefits of collagen?

According to WebMDcollagen can provide health benefits such as:

  • improved skin health
  • reduction of joint pain
  • stronger bones
  • increased muscle mass and strength
  • thicker hair
  • healthier nails

What are the potential side effects?

According to WebMD, the "side effects of collagen supplements are rare. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you may want to hold off on taking a collagen supplement for now, since there isn’t yet enough research to come to any conclusions about their safety."

Finally, what else do we need to know about collagen and collagen coffee, in particular?

According to EatingWell.comnot all collagen supplements are made equal. In other words, they don’t all contain the same ingredients. For the maximum health benefits, read collagen powder labels and look for "collagen peptides" or "hydrolyzed collagen."

Some data suggests that collagen won't hold up in temperatures higher than 98.6 degrees F; the desired health benefits will either be diminished, if not entirely negated, when used in hot beverages. So should everyone start their day like Jennifer Aniston does, with a steaming mug of coffee mixed with collagen powder? Based on our findings, one might be better off stirring collagen powder into an iced coffee, a glass of water or a smoothie. But your morning ritual is yours to determine.

Note that you can also get collagen from eating foods high in amino acids and vitamin C-rich foods, such as

I've picked up collagen powder and pills before to buy them, but never do. May have to add this to my diet.

I'm with you, Donna John . If it helps keep Jennifer looking the way she does, I may need to try this. Thanks for the insights, Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead !
