Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) for Health: 5 Facts About the Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar Nutrition Family Health Men's Health Women's Health Weight Loss Heart Health
Apple cider vinegar is certainly trending, but many might not know why it's so popular. Apple cider vinegar comes from apples that have been crushed, distilled and then fermented. It can be consumed in small quantities or taken as a supplement, and its high levels of acetic acid might be responsible for its supposed health benefits.
According to Harvard Health, compounds containing vinegar have been used for their presumed healing properties for thousands of years to aid both detoxification and weight loss.
Thinking about trying apple cider vinegar? Here are some facts about apple cider vinegar you need to know:
- Several of the proposed benefits of apple cider vinegar are improved digestion, weight loss, blood sugar control and heart health. However, these benefits have not yet been entirely proven in the research and are more anecdotal.
- Some studies have shown in those people who consumed 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily felt more full and consumed over 200 less calories throughout the day, as well as lost 2 to 3 pounds additional pounds over the course of three months.
- If you choose to try apple cider vinegar, it's recommended to do so in moderation up to 1 to 2 tablespoons per day or in the form of a high-quality daily apple cider vinegar supplement.
- Apple cider vinegar should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, such as your pantry. It does not have to be refrigerated after opening as it will not improve its shelf life.
- Due to the acidity of the vinegar itself, apple cider vinegar is "self-preserving," and so it technically does not expire. It also has antimicrobial properties, which may help contribute to its long shelf life. However, to retain the best quality, it is recommended for apple cider vinegar to be consumed within two years of purchase. There is no danger in consuming it after this time, but the taste, texture and visual appearance of the liquid may be affected.
- The taste and aesthetics of apple cider vinegar change over time, mainly because it is exposed to oxygen every time it's opened. It may become hazy or cloudy in appearance, or you may notice fibers forming at the bottom of the bottle. These changes may also affect the taste, causing it to taste more acidic. Again, there is no risk to consuming it, but it may alter the taste of your recipes. After two years, it's best to buy a fresh bottle of apple cider vinegar.
