Early Warning Signs of a Stroke: Know the Symptoms & Seek Medical Treatment ASAP Family Health

Every 40 seconds, someone has a stroke. Too often, victims don’t recognize the signs or wait to see if the symptoms go away before seeking emergency treatment, but this is the wrong approach. During a stroke, your brain loses 1.9 million cells a minute, and delayed treatment increases the chance of lingering speech difficulties, memory loss, behavioral changes or worse, death. If you experience these stroke warning signs, call for help immediately:

  • Blurred vision or seeing double.
  • Numbness or the feeling of pins and needles in your arm or other extremities.
  • Slurred speech.
  • Wobbliness or poor balance.
  • Confusion or loss of train of thought.
  • A bad migraine.

As we age, it can be easy to chalk stroke symptoms up to just being exhausted, but don’t fall into that trap. If you suspect you are having a stroke, call 911. Every second counts! Learn more at WeChooseNPS.org.

We lost my uncle in January to a massive stroke, and my dad had a minor stroke a couple years ago. They are scary and everyone needs to know the signs.

Such a frightening thing because it often comes on so suddenly. Thank you for this very helpful information, Joyce Knestrick, CRNP, FAANP !
