Kids With ADHD & ODD: Struggling to Parent a Challenging Child? Try This! Special Needs

As a mom of a child with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it has become apparent that I need to discipline in a different way than I was raised. It has taken many years to transition into this parent (I’m still transitioning), and I could not have done it without a support system.

The advice I would give to any parent who has a challenging child is to surround yourself with supportive adults who care about your child. I meet with my son’s teachers, speech pathologist and school counselor to learn what strategies work in the classroom. We support each other in trying to navigate a way to build my son’s self-esteem but also teach him right from wrong. As one teacher said, “This not only helps me work with your child, it is making me a better overall teacher.”

Creating this climate takes patience and reflection. We could blame each other for not doing what we think the other person should do. Instead, we reflect on our own behaviors and share what works and what doesn’t.

Everyone is willing to learn from the group. Is it perfect? No. Do we falter sometimes? Yes. We have to remember we are human and make mistakes. Having a group of supportive adults helps you through those weak moments.
