Sitting Is the New Smoking: 5 Easy Ways to Add More Physical Activity to Your Day Family Health Fitness

Have you heard? Sitting is the new smoking. Multiple studies show that the effects of sitting may be more harmful than you thought. Just three minutes of moderate physical activity every 30 minutes is enough to lower your blood glucose and stave off some of the negative effects of sitting. So how can you add in three minutes every 30?

  • Print at the copier farthest away from your desk and take the long way.
  • Alternate marching in place with stepping side to side, 30 seconds each.
  • Walk up and down stairs.
  • Take a quick walk outside the office or the house.
  • Do an office circuit – repeat standing up and sitting down for 30 seconds, do 10 desk pushups, stretch 15 seconds and repeat twice for a total of three circuits.

What if you can’t get up every 30 minutes? In a long meeting? On a road trip? Then move 5 for 60! You will increase your energy level and decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease.

So, put down the phone and get moving!

Love this, Allison Raeh ! Walking is my fave form of exercise, and I try to get my 10K a day. Don't always, tho. But I will need to work on 3 minutes out of every 30! That is hard for this computer-stationed chica. Thanks for the tips!
