Caring for a family member or friend can be one of the most difficult situations you’ll ever face. It can change the dynamic of your relationship with yourself, which can be uncomfortable – but at the same time, a transformative opportunity. Figuring out what to do on a daily basis can pose a problem, but taking one step at a time to maintain balance is a way forward. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Find a good counselor or support group. Speaking with a therapist or participating in a support group can make this time much easier for both you and your loved one. Ask your doctor for a recommendation!
  • Routine is your friend. Sticking to a schedule creates a feeling of comfort and safety, especially if your loved one has dementia or Alzheimer’s. Start with your current routine, and prioritize “must do’s” and “nice to do’s.”
  • Be sure to include “fun” in your schedule. Fun time relieves stress and anxiety. Considering your loved one’s energy level, try to organize at least one fun activity a week – looking through old family photos, having friends drop by for a visit or a shopping trip to find new pillows.
