Forget to Wear Sunscreen, Mom? Skin Cancer Facts You Need to Know! Family Health Cancer

About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to the sun. Parents are good about slathering the kids with sunscreen when they head outside, but are we as vigilant when it comes to our own protection from the sun?

When skin cells are damaged by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds, they could begin to multiply and form a tumor. One in five Americans develops skin cancer during the course of a lifetime. More people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined! Your risk for developing melanoma doubles if you have had more than five sunburns.

How can you reduce your risk? When it’s time to apply the kids’ sunscreen, don’t forget yourself! Daily use of SPF 15 or higher will reduce your risk of melanoma by 50 percent.
