At Loyola, we have some top breast cancer researchers including Dr. Kathy Albain. She was co-author of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that showed that some women diagnosed with breast cancer can avoid chemotherapy.
A 21-gene test is done on the tumor to see how active the genes are. The lower the number, the less chance the cancer will spread to other organs if treated with a pill such as tamoxifen – and the women will not have to undergo chemotherapy. Great news for some women! Be sure to talk to your doctor.
