504 Plan: Your Kid’s Informal School Accommodations Will Have the Law Behind Them! by Pepi Silverman

If your child has a condition that adversely impacts the ability to participate in a “life activity” such as “learning,” he or she may qualify for a 504 plan.

• 504 plans provide helpful accommodations, which can make learning in school more successful. This is especially true if your child already gets informal supports at school and you want to make sure those supports continue.
• A 504 plan outlines how a child’s specific needs are met with accommodations, modifications and other services. Accommodations “remove barriers” to learning. 
• A 504 plan could also include specialized instruction in a general education classroom.
