Most of us struggle with keeping our metabolism moving and not slowing down. Our basal metabolic rate (BMR), activity level and food thermogenesis play a key role and how our metabolism functions. Our BMR accounts for more than half of how our metabolism behaves. It is very adaptable to the "needs" of our bodies. If we have an infection, it speeds up. If we fast it slows downs to conserve. Studies show our BMR decreases naturally with age. Here are some tips to help against the slowing of our metabolism!
- Stay hydrated
- Eat enough protein (lean protein, if possible)
- Participate in aerobic activity - high-intensity exercise gives us an "after burn"
- Practice strength training - muscle (resting and active) burns more calories than fat
- Eat! By not eating you lose muscle and water weight
Let's keep our metabolism moving!
Remember, sometimes we confuse thirst for hunger and we wind up eating. Try a glass of water first and go from there.
