GLP-1 Medications Side Effects & Side Benefits: What You Need to Know When Taking Semaglutide by Jacob Teitelbaum

Semaglutide is one of the best new medication releases of the decade. This GLP-1 drug addresses weight gain and insulin resistance, which are key causes of chronic illness in the modern world. Because of this, it is expected to show many important side benefits.

As is normal with expensive medications, the benefits are initially getting most of the attention while the side effects and complications are being largely ignored. This is unfortunate because many of the downsides are easy to prevent.

Semaglutide can be a very beneficial medication if simple precautions are taken while using it. The main problem is with the nutritional deficiencies caused by the medicines, along with loss of muscle and bone density. These can lead to numerous health problems, including premature aging, but they can be easily avoided.

Physicians should address a few preventive measures when prescribing GLP-1 medications:

Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies

The standard American diet loses fully 50 percent of vitamins and minerals in food processing. This leaves most Americans with suboptimal intakes of multiple nutrients, which contributes to a wide array of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, pain, fatigue, osteoporosis and other issues. Multiple micronutrient efficiencies have been documented with semaglutide use. It is especially important to supplement with a high potency multivitamin powder that contains vitamin D 1000 iu, B1 (25 to 50 mg), B12 (250 to 500 mcg as methylcobalamin), magnesium (200 mg), calcium (increase milk products) and other nutrients. Testing for these tends to be unreliable and it is best to simply take a good high potency multivitamin that delivers these nutrients.

Diabetes and Vitamin B12

This is especially important in light of new research suggesting that millions of diabetics are prone to easily preventable but devastating nerve pain caused by vitamin B12 deficiency but mistakenly attributed to their diabetes. Both the diabetes medication metformin and semaglutide dramatically decrease vitamin B12 absorption to levels where the RDAs are simply not adequate. People on semaglutide (or the diabetes medication metformin) should take a multivitamin containing at least 250 micrograms of methylcobalamin vitamin B12.

Muscle Loss and Wasting With Premature Aging

Muscle loss can account for as much as 40 percent of the weight loss seen with these medications. It is essential that people taking these medications increase their protein intake. Aim for 1/2 to 3/4 gm of protein daily per pound of body weight, spread through the day. A simple way to supplement protein would be to eat three eggs for breakfast or a cup of Greek yogurt (each has 18 to 20 gm protein). Contrary to earlier beliefs, research now shows that eggs do not significantly increase the risk of elevated cholesterol or heart disease. Increasing meat intake can also help be helpful, which addresses the iron deficiency often common with this medication. As your appetite is decreased, eat the proteins in a meal before the carbs.

Loss of Bone Density

A study in the February 2026 issue of Clinical Obesity looked at almost half a million people taking GLP-1 medications. It found that increased deficiencies of vitamin D, calcium and other nutrients critical for bone density were common. A good high-potency multivitamin powder should include the key multiple nutrients essential for healthy bone density including vitamin D, B12, B6, C (250 to 500 mg), folate (as 5 MTHF 200 to 400 mcg) and K2 (100 mcg), and the minerals calcium, magnesium and boron (2 to 3 mg).

Unfortunately, the RDAs may be inadequate. Therefore, I recommend patients on GLP-1 medications proactively take these simple preventive measures:
