Hawaiian Sweet & Sour Smoked Sausage Stir Fry Recipe (5 Ingredients, 15 Minutes) Budget Recipes High Protein Recipes Shortcut Recipes Pork Dinner Beef Turkey Recipes Fruit
My husband is a hunter, so it goes without saying that we have several freezers full of meat year-round. After a quick inspection of their contents before deer seasoned opened this year, I found a lot of smoked sausage. A lot. Instead of just throwing links on the grill or making my go-to recipes for gumbo and jambalaya, I decided to try something a bit different. This Hawaiian sweet and sour smoked sausage stir fry recipe was a welcome change and fun, colorful way to use smoked sausage. This high-protein budget recipe will be on repeat at my house!
The high-protein recipe only requires five simple ingredients from your fridge and pantry. Here is your short shopping list for this stir-fry recipe: smoked sausage (you can use beef, pork, chicken, turkey or even deer sausage), a red bell pepper (check out the health benefits of red bell pepper), an onion (check out the health benefits of onion), pineapple chunks (check out the health benefits of pineapple) and a bottle of sweet chili sauce. If you can't find sweet chili sauce, you could use sweet and sour sauce. The easy shortcut dinner cooks up in about 10 minutes.
The smoky, sweet, tangy sauce and vegetables are delicious for dinner piled on top of rice, but you could also serve it with rice noodles or your favorite grain. The smoked sausage stir fry is a creative meal-prep recipe, too.
Fun Variation: We all know how popular Spam™ is in Hawaii. Try this recipe with cubed Spam™ instead of smoked sausage.
Cuisine: American / Hawaiian
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 14 - 16 ounces smoked sausage, cut into rounds
- 1 red bell pepper, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 onion, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup pineapple chunks (canned or fresh)
- 1/3 cup sweet chili sauce
Optional Garnishes
- fresh cilantro, chopped
- green onions, sliced
Here's how to make it:
- Put the sausage, red bell pepper and onion into a skillet.
- Cook over medium-high heat until sausage is lightly browned and vegetables have softened a bit, about 5 minutes.
- Add the pineapple chunks and sweet chili sauce. (If you want it saucier, add more sweet chili sauce.)
- Cook, stirring often, for about 5 minutes. (You could stir in some chopped green onion now and even add some cilantro. For some spice, add some crushed red pepper flakes.) Season with black pepper, if desired. (I added black pepper but no additional salt.)
- Serve over rice garnished with fresh cilantro and green onions, if desired. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat in the microwave. The meal freezes well for quick dinners later.
